Description:

An introduction to phonetics with emphasis on the principles of speech production and on practical skills in discriminating and transcribing sounds from various languages of the world. Topics to be covered include vocal tract anatomy, phonation, airstream mechanisms, the International Phonetic Association (IPA) transcription alphabet, the classification of speech sounds, types of transcription (broad vs narrow, phonemic vs phonetic), pitch, stress, tempo, and loudness.
