Description:

Introduction to theoretical syntax for graduate students who have no previous exposure to generative syntax in 1980s and 1990s. The course is designed to familiarize the students with the "Principles and Parameters" approach recast in the "Minimalist Program." After discussing the goals of theoretical linguistics and introducing a particular model of grammar, we will examine linguistic facts in English and other languages and their explanation offered in the literature. Emphasis will be placed upon generalization and argumentation rather than memorization of the facts or mechanical details of theoretical devices. The major areas of inquiry are: thematic interpretation, Case marking, phrase structures, anaphoric relations, movement and empty categories.

The class will proceed mainly with the instructor's lectures (often based upon the materials relevant but not covered by the textbook) followed by or mixed with class discussion and exercises.
