T660 | 2769 | Hartford
Prerequisite: T532 or consent of the instructor.
This course looks at Contrastive Rhetoric, considering the cross-cultural aspects of discourse
organization for different genres and different purposes. Various aspects of text will be
emphasized, including coherence and cohesion, and the roles of formal and cultural schemata.
Some of the genres we will look at include expository writing, letters, and news articles.
Students will write a major research paper either comparing the rhetorical organizations of two
languages/cultures, exploring one in more detail, analyzing texts which second language learners
might read, or analyzing texts written by second language learners. Authorization for this course
must be obtained from the department.
