In this course we will explore the varieties of apocalyptic
expectations--both religious and secular--at the close of this century in
America. Apocalypticism, broadly defined as belief in a potential imminent
end to the present order and/or a dramatic historical transition, has been
a powerful force in Western and American religion and culture. We will
examine the religious and historical background to these ideas, the
diverse manifestations they have had in Western life and thought, and
contemporary expressions of these traditions in America. Assigned "texts"
will range widely, including biblical and religious writings, literature,
science fiction, film, and music. We will take advantage of the
contemporary burst of scholarship dealing with apocalypticism,
millennialism, and disaster theory. Evaluation will be based on classroom
participation, presentations to the seminar, and a major research paper.
