R360 The Body (3 Cr.) - Hart TR 11:15-12:30 SY 002
The body is both subject and object, both the experiencing and the
experienced, both the medium of the world and in the world. Authors in
the phenomenological tradition have been at work for a hundred years
teasing out some of the distinctions and features that emerge in
reflecting on our selves as embodied. This course has several components:
a) a phenomenology of the body in its basic formal features; b) an
exploration of some of the distinctive forms of embodiment, e.g., gender;
and c) the wild component, the anomalous, weird, metanormal bodily
phenomena, e.g., the mystics, artists, athletes, and parapsychology.
Readings: Drew Leder, The Absent Body, Donn Welton, ed. of an anthology of
the body, Michael Murphy, The Future of the Body. Meets with R581.
