Meditation is the heart of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain spirituality in India.
It is also the basis for all
philosophical reflection in India. This course will look at the practice,
philosophy and structure
of meditation in these great religious traditions. The course will also
examine the monastic life
in India, the role of the holy person and the importance of the
guru-student relationship. Course
requirements will include two mid-terms, a creative essay on meditation
and a take-home final
examination. Readings will include Eliade's Yoga: Immortality and
Freedom, Zimmer's Artistic
Form and Yoga in the Sacred Images of India, and Swami Hariharananda
Aranya's Yoga. Meets with India Studies I347.
