Topic: Asian American Experience

This course surveys the history of Asian Americans. It
highlights the experiences, both historical and contemporary, of
diverse Asian American groups (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Koreans,
South Asians, and Southeast Asians). We will explore in
particular various dimensions of the Asian American immigrant
experience, with special attention to labor market status, gender
relations, family, and political participation. We will also
critically examine the constitution of diasporic identities among
Asian Americans. Who exactly is Asian American? What does it
mean to be both Asian and American? In order to answer these
questions, we will explore the economic, political and cultural
contexts that shape the lives of Asian Americans.
