FORMER TITLE WAS VARIATIONS IN HUMAN SEXUALITY I
ABOVE SECTION OPEN TO UNDERGRADUATES ONLY

This course will examine sexuality and its various dimensions
from a sociological perspective. We will look at the ways in
which sexuality, sexual identities and sexual activities are
affected by the social environment, including economy, culture
and social inequality. Similarly, we will analyze how sex
influence the wider society (with a specific focus on how
"marginal" sexualities challenge the common sense assumptions
held by a majority of people). Finally, we will also discuss the
ways in which sexual expressions (images, activities, beliefs and
values) differ across time and space. Topics include, among
others, 3rd gender categories, different ways of conceptualizing
and thinking about body and sex, the construction of female and
male sexualities, the place of "sex talk" in contemporary
society, and subcultures based on sexuality.
