This course is designed to provide an overview of sociological
perspectives on mental health and mental illness. We will cover
three main substantive areas during the semester: social
definitions of mental illness, social determinants of mental
illness, and help-seeking and treatment, including the
organization of mental health care. Within each area, we will
consider competing theoretical paradigms and relevant empirical
research, drawing on both classic and contemporary readings.
