This course will examine the shaping forces of modern France since the
Revolution of 1789. The emphasis will be on the social, economic,
political, and intellectual developments. The course will include
considerable materials on contemporary France including the impact of
France's membership in the European Union, intellectual currents such
as Structuralism and Deconstruction, the Jospin government and the
role of France in the world today.
