This course explores the nature of language, with specific application to English in its many forms, as well as issues of language use and communication in a social context. The first major unit of the course focuses on the structure of English, including a survey of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and pragmatics; we will devote special attention to syntax. The second major unit investigates language change and variability and considers how these issues intersect with language policies.
Grades will be based on exams, regular quizzes, some short writings, class participation and attendance.
