The course traces the evolution of American society and thought from
early in the 17th century through the Civil War. We shall focus upon
ways in which social-cultural and political-economic developments
influenced the thoughts and emotions of Americans in specific
communities and regions during particular time periods. This is
because local and regional issues were usually more important than
national concerns. Much emphasis shall be placed upon emerging
patterns of race and gender relationships. Examinations shall be of
the essay variety. They will require interpretation and analysis of
major developments rather than rehash of small details. Paperback
interpretive books shall be assigned. Films shall also be assigned.
