CLASS MEETING:
One 75 minute period four times per week (Monday thru Thursday)
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to the modern jazz style of movement as it integrates with
sound biomechanical principles. Phrasing, dynamics, and other qualities
will be discussed.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of correct postural alignment;
2. Perform the warm-up sequence from memory;
3. Demonstrate performance mastery of three movement combinations, based on
selected jazz steps.
4. Demonstrate select performance elements (facial projection, style,
dynamics) in each of the aforementioned combinations.
COURSE TOPICS INCLUDE:
1. Warm-up content
a. abdominal strengthening
b. shoulder/arm strengthening
c. lateral flexions
d. ballet positions for arms/feet
e. piles/releves
f. isolations
2. Terminology/jazz steps
3. Jazz dance history
4. Jazz combinations
a. jazz skills
b. classical jazz style
c. "Funk"/MTV style
5. Movement analysis/mechanics
6. Dance films/videos

EXAMS:
1. Two written quizzes = 25 points each
2. Three performance exams = 25 points each
ASSIGNMENTS:
1. One article summary = 10 points each
ATTENDANCE:
Students are allowed a maximum of three (3) absences. Upon a fourth
absence, the student has three (3) options:
1. receive a grade of F;
2. officially withdraw from the class;
3. follow an appeal procedure through your instructor and/or the Elective
Program Coordinator.
GRADING:
1. Two quizzes = 50 points
2. Performance exams = 75 points
TOTAL COURSE POINT = 125 points
92% - 100% = A's
83% - 91% = B's
74% - 83% = C's
65% - 73% = D's
