Criminal Justice-coas | Crime and Madness
P415 | 1408 | Ellen Dwyer

This course focuses on the issues which emerge at the intersection of
the criminal justice and mental health systems, including the
involvement of increasing numbers of long-term mentally ill
individuals with the police, jails, and prisons. We look with
particular care at a number of current debates which involve concerns
about both "the mad" and "the bad," including the insanity defense,
competency to stand trial, and so-called violent sexual predators. We
consider the ways in which these issues are treated by the popular
media, as well as by scholars in a range of fields (social science and
legal).
