This course will provide an overview of the various ways in which the
criminal justice system has engaged in discriminatory practices
against African Americans. Major emphasis will be devoted to an
examination of the War on Drugs, the disproportionate representation
of African Americans among incarcerated offenders, and racial
profiling. Some class discussion will also consider the unintended
consequences of unequal justice.

Performance Evaluation:

Final courses grades will be determined based on assessment of the
following course projects:

Weekly written assignments related to the assigned readings – 50%.A
10-page Position Paper that discusses a particular set of public
policies and/or criminal justice agency practices or other program
initiatives designed to reduce racial disparities in the
administration of justice in the United States – 50%.
