COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION
This section of L204 will examine four major forms of fiction: the
short story, the novella, the novel, and the novel-in-stories. We
will study about two dozen classic and contemporary short stories by
male and female writers (including writers from North and South
America, Africa, and Europe), Joseph Conrad's novella "Heart of
Darkness" as well as Chinua Achebe’s critical response to it, Ernest
Hemingway's short novel The Old Man and the Sea, Ken Kesey’s
novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Gloria Naylor's
novel-in-stories The Women of Brewster Place. The class will
focus on how these works were written (by learning the identity and
functions of various fictional techniques) as well as what these works
suggest about the human condition.
Since this course fulfills the Intensive Writing Requirement, four
papers in addition to a midterm and final essay exam will be
required.
