This course will examine short stories by such classic American
writers as James Baldwin,
Saul Bellow, Ralph Ellison, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald,
Gail Godwin, Ernest
Hemingway, Zora Neale Hurston, Bernard Malamud, Joyce Carol Oates,
Flannery O’Connor,
Katherine Anne Porter, John Steinbeck, John Updike, and Eudora Welty,
as well as the
following novels: Christ in Concrete,, by Pietro di Donato;
The Catcher in the
Rye, by J. D. Salinger; One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by
Ken Kesey;
Slaughterhouse Five, by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., and The Color
Purple, by Alice
Walker.
Two papers in addition to a midterm and final essay exam will be
required.
