S333 The Hispanic World (3 credits)
Prerequisite: S310 or S311 or equivalent
S333 equivalent to S331 or S332

An introduction to literature in Spanish, with readings and discussions of
three main genres (narrative, poetry, drama), and with special attention to
the twentieth century. Students will be tested on knowledge of literary
history as explained in class, basic critical response to readings, and
ability to present independent research. As with all advanced Spanish
courses, a solid familiarity with all aspects of the Spanish language is
assumed and expected of the students. All discussion and written work shall
be in Spanish; the fluidity of the language will be an element in the grade.

Students must be prepared to discuss in class the assigned readings and
integrate the instructor's explanations, further commentary, and other
material. In addition they will prepare three short (2-3 pages) research
papers of a critical nature, in Spanish, following the guidelines the
instructor will present. Late submissions will result in a lowering of the
grade. There will be a midterm exam and two in-class presentations.
