This course will trace the history of Latin America from Independence
until the contemporary era.  It will look at a wide range of
historical phenomena from military strongmen in the nineteenth century
to peasant revolutionaries in the twentieth.  The readings will be a
mix of primary source material like newspaper accounts, novels and
cartoons, works of art and textbooks.  A range of countries will be
covered from Mexico and Guatemala to Brazil and Argentina.  Average of
70 pages reading a week.  No prior coursework on Latin America
required.  The format will involve a blend of lectures, films and
discussion groups.
