Music | Women in Pop and Rock Music
Z320 | 1295 | Burkett

This course will offer an introduction to women's experiences with
genres of popular music from the blues of the 1920s through the riot
grrls of the 1990s. By the end of this course, you will be able to
distinguish between different styles and genres of music sung, played,
and produced by women, including blues, girl-group, folk-rock, punk,
and womyn’s music. You will also be able to identify and discuss some
common themes that characterize women's experiences in the world of
rock and popular music, and develop your own ideas on relationships
between gender and rock and popular music. Students will be evaluated
on the basis of three quizzes, an in-class presentation, and class
participation. No previous musical experience is necessary.
