This is an introductory course to Ethics. It will be a survey of
major ethical theories in Western Philosophy and of the philosophers
with whom those theories are respectively associated. Consequently,
there will be stress on History of Philosophy as we will explore each
theory/figure in its historical and cultural context.
The course will also include a strong emphasis on ethical theory in
its ap[plication to life in the world today. Thus, there will be a
historical survey of social and personal ethical ideas combined with
emphasis on what these might mean for us. We will explore such
questions as "What is it to be good?", Why should we pursue the
Good?", "What kind of lives ought we to live?"
