Introduction to Fiction

COLLEGE INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION

In this Intensive Writing course, we will also do a good deal of intensive reading: of fiction both old and new, both serious and funny, both “popular” and “difficult,” written for a wide range of audiences. Many students consider reading for pleasure and reading analytically to be two very different activities. Through investigations of plot, character, point of view, symbolism, and other narrative elements, we will challenge this apparent opposition, exploring the pleasures of literary interpretation. Writing assignments, likewise, will be designed to break down perceived divisions between “academic” (i.e., lucid but boring) and “creative” (i.e., imaginative but undisciplined) writing.

Students will typically read one or two short stories each day and write one short essay (2-3 pages) each week. A longer (5-8 page) analytical/creative assignment will be due the last week of class. Active participation in class discussions will be both encouraged and required.
