COLLEGE INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION
This section of L204: Introduction to Fiction will examine several major forms of fiction: the short story, the novella, the novel, and the novel-in-stories. In addition to reading about two dozen classic and contemporary short stories by male and female writers (including writers from North and South America, Africa, and Europe), we will also study Bharati Mukherjee’s The Middleman and Other Stories and Paul Auster’s Timbuktu. The class will focus on how these works were written (by learning the identity and functions of various fictional techniques) as well as what these works suggest about the human condition. Since this course fulfills the Intensive Writing Requirement, five papers in addition to a midterm and final exam will be required.
