Twentieth Century American Poetry

01:10p-2:25p D (30) 3 cr.

L357 will survey the major movements and figures of 20th Century American verse, beginning with the advent of modernism and ending with a survey of American poetry at the beginning of the new century. We will pay particular attention to Frost, Crane, H.D., Eliot, Williams, Stevens, and some other modernists; to Lowell, Bishop, Jarrell, Roethke, and other “middle generation” figures, and finally to the various schools which have dominated American verse in the past thirty years. Students will write two short papers, an in-class mid- term exam, and a take-home final.
