A common conception of psychology is that it primarly deals with
abnormal behavior. Although abnormal behavior is one subject of
psychological inquiry, it is not the focus of a large number of
psychologists. Indeed, the major goal of psychology is to understand
what it is that makes us human. That is, psychologists study the
structures of the brain, how we sense and perceive the world around
us, how we learn, and what motivates us. These are the topics we will
be covering in this course. We will review the scientific basis of
psychology and learn how scientific research in psychology is
conducted. You will gain knowledge of some of the major approaches to
understanding human thought and behavior including biological,
cognitive and behavioral models of human functioning. Many students
walk away from the course with a new appreciation for the breadth of
topics, addressed by psychologists including issues of genetics and
heredity, the impact of age and physical decay on mental functioning,
and the roles our social groups play in shaping our behaviors and
attitudes. This will be a thought provoking course which will give you
a sound foundation in the scientific underpinnings of modern day
psychology.
