How did people in traditional China see their place in the world?
What did they do when they ill, had nightmares or wanted to tell the
future?

In this course we will examine how people in Traditional China
perceived the relationship between the human body and the universe.
Looking at a variety of practices including self-cultivation,
healing, dream interpretation, geomancy and martial arts we will
examine how people in Traditional China perceived the human body,
spirits, disease and health, life and death. We will analyze the
notions of yin and yang, the five phases, and qi, the primal energy
of the universe. These ideas are still at the core of Chinese life
today and are becoming increasingly popular in the West.

Readings will be in English and require no prior knowledge of China
or Chinese. Grading will be based on active participation, response
papers, and a final project.
