(3cr.) This course discusses the traditional health practices
(complementary or alternative) used as primary health care by 65-85%
of the worlds population. Discussion and activities will center on
enhancing awareness of such complementary and alternative practices
as acupressure, acupuncture, aromatherapy, biomagnetic applications,
chiropractics, herbology/botanicals, homeopathy, meditation, and
naturopathy. Focus will be placed on a greater understanding of these
practices, their history and regulation, effectiveness, safety, and
keys to finding qualified practitioners.
Objectives:
Develop a greater understanding of the 5
specific fields of complementary and alternative health practices as
delineated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and how these
practices can be integrated into traditional Western health care.
Become more aware of the regulations and
training required or recommended to practice in these areas of health
care.
Practice or observe tools and mechanisms used
in these health practices
Learn more about an indigenous medical system
Research and report on a home or folk remedy
that has been practiced by family or friends.
Research and report on an herb or botanical.
Self-reflection on the role of complementary
and alternative health practices
