Fulfills the Social Action Seminar requirement for the minor in
Leadership, Ethics, and Social Action. The goal of this seminar is
to help students engage in critical, reflective thinking about the
causes of engagement and non-engagement in political and community
affairs. This will be an intensive course in which students will
exposed to academic literature on political participation, social
capital formation, and voting behavior. These issues will form the
basis of a class project. The project will consist of focus groups
that student teams will be organizing and leading. Each team will
learn how to conduct and lead focus groups. These teams will be
responsible for translating the academic material encountered in the
course into topics to examine in the focus groups. Students will
receive technical training in video-editing techniques for recording
and distilling information obtained during the focus groups. The end
product of the seminar will be a video that conveys the key insights
that have been learned on what motivates young adults to become
engaged in their communities.
