East Asian Languages and Cultures | East Asia: An Introduction
E100 | 0210 | Kim

This introductory course focuses on modern East Asian societies and
civilizations, emphasizing the twentieth-century experiences of
China, Japan, and Korea. The course aims to provide the historical
and cultural background with which better to understand contemporary
political and economic tensions and trends in this crucial region.
In today’s increasingly transnational world, such a background will
be fundamental to personal and professional enrichment. We will use
texts, focused readings, and films in our lecture/discussion
exploration of East Asia. Evaluation of students will be based on
three in-class exams, attendance and participation, and occasional
homework and quizzes.
