Folklore | Women's Folklore
F363 | 0330 | Kousaleos
This course focuses on the cultural experiences and expressions of
women as viewed from an ethnographic perspective. We will explore
women’s experience (mainly in the U.S. and West Africa), by focusing
on the ways in which women make meaning in their lives through art,
ritual, performance, narrative and other expressive forms. The
course seeks to examine the gender systems in various cultural
contexts which influence and shape the way that individual women
within those cultures make meaning. We will be examining some of
our own gender systems and the institutions through which these are
spread, in order to explore some of the ways our cultural
constructions of gender affect us.
Fulfills a COAS Arts and Humanities, Traditions and Ideas distribution
requirement and is on List A for the COAS Culture Studies requirement.
