This course is designed to explore the history of the United States
from the end of the Civil War to the present. During these years,
the nation underwent a transformation from a predominantly rural
society into one of the most powerful, industrial and political
nations. Special emphasis will be given to American society,
culture, and politics. We will investigate events in such a way as
to see how and why they occurred and the ultimate consequences.
Come prepared to learn about groups of people and individuals.
There will be two in-class midterms (20% each for a total of 40%),
one primary special project (20%), and a take-home comprehensive
final (25%). Attendance and participation (15%).
