L103 | 0432 | M. Cavar
The class will meet daily in the first Summer session.
This course will introduce students to the basic concepts and
methods of the scientific study of human language. We will provide
an overview of the major branches of linguistics, such as phonetics
and phonology (the study of sounds of language), morphology
(internal organization of words), syntax (sentence construction),
semantics (the study of meaning), historical linguistics (language
change), language acquisition, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics,
and computational linguistics. Throughout the course, the topics
will be illustrated by examples from various languages and students
will have a chance to try themselves with simple analyses of
different aspects of linguistic data.
