This course will explore the history and practice of capital
punishment in the United States.  Among the issues to be examined
include the philosophical and moral arguments for and against the
death penalty, the law and ritual guiding the application of capital
punishment, and current controversies surrounding the application of
this sanction.  In addition, this course will examine the execution
process and the experiences of those who live and work on death row.
