East Asian Languages and Cultures | East Asia: An Introduction
E100 | 2018 | Pettit

This course covers a wide range of cultural and historical
developments that shape the modern nations of East Asia, but it is
not a class solely addressing historical events. We will also
explore backgrounds to the major political, literary, and religious
figures and concepts that continue to shape identities of modern
East Asian peoples. Every day of our class we will focus on a
different aspect of East Asia: ancient philsophers, Mao Zedong, the
Korean War, Tibet, the Japanese empire, Buddhism, haiku poetry, and
so on. In addition to a midterm and final exam, students will give
a short presentation on a topic of their choice.
