Instructor: Kris Vander Lugt

Course Numbers: # 2985 / 2986
Office Hours: 11:45-12:45 D
German 491 is the introductory course for students who want to gain
a reading knowledge of German. This course enables students to
acquire the basic passive knowledge of German grammar and vocabulary
necessary for translating and reading texts of various styles and
content. No prior knowledge of German is assumed. The class is
conducted entirely in English; listening, speaking, and writing
skills are not developed, although attention is given to
pronunciation. At the end of the course you should be able to
translate passages and short texts of German scholarly prose with
the help of a dictionary. You should also be familiar with the
German grammar needed to understand and translate the readings.
The class meetings will consist mainly of explanations of grammar
and translations of various texts. Due to the shortened summer
semester, the class moves at an accelerated pace: The instructor
will introduce new grammar points daily (at least one chapter of the
required textbook per meeting), which will then be practiced in the
homework assignments for the following day. In addition, we will be
doing some easy on-sight readings in class. The homework consists
in doing translations (as part) of exercises and of short prose
paragraphs, reinforcing the grammar covered on the day before, and
also in reading the grammar for the ensuing chapter in the textbook.
Any graduate student may enroll in G491. Please note that neither
491 nor G492 carries graduate credit (towards graduate degree
requirements) in the University Graduate School, although most
departments accept G491 enrollment as part of a student's current
program of study. Undergraduates may enroll in G491 if they have
already fulfilled the foreign language requirement for the B.A. in
another language. Especially note: The Department of Germanic
Studies does not permit auditing of G491 for any reason. This is
not negotiable, nor will the instructor entertain questions
regarding auditing.
