This course will examine the effects of cultural and linguistic
diversity
on current clinical practice in speech-language pathology.  Both
assessment and intervention issues will be considered.  Included
within
the course are topics such as the relationship between language,
culture
and thought, cross-cultural communication, bilingual language
development,
non-biased assessment, and intervention principles for working with
non-mainstream groups.  Lecture and class discussion formats will be
followed, with the use of actual clinical case studies that are
relevant
for the topics being covered.  A reading packet will be available.
Course
requirements include weekly in-class and out-of-class assignments,
test
critique and modification for non-mainstream populations, and a final
project.
