In this course we will look at some of the important British and
Irish poets of the last century, especially Thomas Hardy, W. B.
Yeats, T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, Philip Larkin, Seamus Heaney and
Carol Ann Duffy. The focus will be on poetry as an individual art,
as well as on the different aesthetics—traditional and modernist and
post-modernist—that have created manifestos and movements. Course
requirements may include weekly research projects, short papers, in-
class writing and tests.
