Linguistics | Introduction to the Study of Language
L103 | 8408 | Iskrova

L103 is designed to be the student's first encounter with
linguistics. We will look at language from different perspectives:
speech sounds, their production (phonetics) and the regularities
governing their occurrence in languages (phonology), the structure
of words (morphology) and sentences (syntax). The first part of the
course will introduce basic concepts and methods of modern
linguistic research. In the second part of the semester, we will
focus on particular topics of linguistic studies, such as the study
of dialectal variation, historical development of languages,
language acquisition by children, sign language, and the use of
computers in dealing with languages.
