Fine Arts | Ancient Rome in Art & Film (Topics in Ancient Art)
A310 | 12053 | Van Voorhis

This course will examine the way that ancient Rome has been
treated in the movies from the early 20th century to the present
day. Each week will focus on one specific movie, which will be
screened outside of the class period. Prior to the screening of
each film we will explore the historical period and topics that the
movie addresses, looking at a combination of ancient literary
sources, archaeological evidence and art objects. After screening
the film, the class will examine it from a range of historical,
critical and artistic perspectives. Weekly film reviews and a
longer paper analyzing a movie set in ancient Rome but not covered
in class will be required.
