PREREQUISITE: COMPLETION OF THE ENGLISH COMPOSITION REQUIREMENT.
This course teaches the required skills for studying literature with
pleasure and understanding. The course's focus is on the development
of critical skills essential to active and intelligent participation
in the interpretive process. This will be achieved through class
discussion and focused writing assignments. Our class will read and
study the three major genres of literature (poetry, drama, and
fiction) along with a critical text that discusses and demonstrates
active critical reading and the stages of writing about literature,
and that offer specific instruction in writing about poetry, drama,
and fiction. Assignments will likely consist of at least four short
papers along with informal in-class writing, quizzes, and a midterm
essay and final.
