This course investigates the foundations of democracy at the
supranational level of governance. How does democracy work in a
system of governance that involves multiple countries, such as the
European Union. The course begins by examining theories of
democracy, models of democratic systems and the structural and
institutional conditions for democratic governance. We will then
examine the possibility for establishing such forms of governance at
a higher level, specifically the European Union. The course offers
an introduction to the history, institutions and decision-making
processes of the EU, before examining the obstacles to democratic
governance at the supranational level.
