Gender Studies | Issues in Gender Studies: Vagina Monologues
G302 | 12354 | Williams, K

Having celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, V-Day first began
in 1998 as a fundraiser to benefit New York City area anti-domestic
violence organizations. It has since evolved into a transnational
feminist phenomenon, at the bedrock of which is playwright Eve
Enslerís The Vagina Monologues. From V-Dayís early U.S.-based anti-
domestic violence focus, its scope has expanded to incorporate a
more inclusive critique of all forms of sexualized violence. As a
result, The Vagina Monologues has been translated and performed
across the United States, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and
Central Asia as part of local feministsí struggles to pass anti-
violence legislation in their own communities and to bring attention
to the horrendous acts of sexualized violence perpetrated against
women and girls in conflict zones around the world.
