The sociological perspective helps us look beyond individuals to
identify and analyze broader social issues. Through this lens this
course examines a range of societal issues, from face-to-face
interaction to globalization, from social stability to revolution,
from the self to society. By relating classical and contemporary
social theories to everyday life, we will examine how society
assigns meaning to common concepts like race, class, and gender. We
will look critically at social institutions such as politics, the
family, education, and even science, and consider how these
institutions are shaped by, and in turn shape, society.
