Over the last century we have learned many new facts about our
society and more specifically about the “average person”. We know,
for example, that half of all marriages end in divorce and that most
Americans support the death penalty. We also know that our social
networks are shrinking and that friendships affect our health and
wealth. In this course we will become critical consumers of social
statistics and their presentation in the media and in our daily
life. Furthermore, we will become familiar with basic sociological
concepts and with methods that sociologists use to
describe/understand our society. In short, we are going to make
sense of "fact making."
