Course title: Human Rights NOW: Human Rights Progress and Challenges
in Western Europe and the EU
POLSY-407 & WEUR-W405
Instructor: Janice Duchene
Time: 1:10-2:25 D

This Summer Session I course, which carries both S&H credit and Global
Civilizations and Culture credit, is an introduction to the human
rights policies and politics within Western Europe and the European
Union, as well as the wider world. It is a broad overview of human
rights policies, organizations, and cultural traditions faced by
actors within Europe and in their interactions globally. We will use
films (such as Hotel Rwanda), simulations, group discussions, and
readings to fully understand this vital topic. Focus will be on how
human rights are addressed in this region through international
humanitarian law, EU human rights law, NGOs, and civil society actors.
We will also examine the treatment of minorities in the EU, as well
as how human rights come into play for foreign policy and humanitarian
aid to areas such as Africa and other parts of the developing world in
times of war and genocide.
