COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION

In this course we will take an historical approach to the study of poetry,
fiction, and drama. This approach emphasizes the tradition--the problems,
challenges, and advantages it presents to those who work within it or
against it. Reading for the course will consist of the HEATH INTRODUCTION
TO FICTION and the HEATH INTRODUCTION TO POETRY, as well as plays by
Sophocles and Shakespeare, and a contemporary book of fiction. There will
be four papers--three critical, one creative--and one examination. The
creative assignment will be photocopied by the student and distributed to
each member of the class for discussion.
