TOPIC: Golden Age Poetry

	This course is designed to explore Spanish Golden Age poetry by means of
an examination of the following topics:

	The Spanish Golden Age: Ideas and attitudes
	The Spanish Renaissance and the reform and renovation of poetry
		Petrarch's influence in Spain
		Garcilaso (and Boscán)
	16th century poetry after Garcilaso
	Salamanca and Seville–Luis de León, Herrera
	Mystics–Santa Teresa and San Juan de la Cruz
	17th Century Poetry
		Góngora
		Lope de Vega
		Quevedo
	The great themes of lyric poetry: time, love, nature, myth, religion
	El ingenio burlesco: la sátira
	Poesía de justas y academias
	La poesía popular
	The Romancero nuevo
	Epic poetry (and the mock epic)
	Plenitude and decline: the second half of the 17th century

Evaluation for undergraduates:
		Midterm exam				20%
		Class participation and attendance   	20%
		Original sonnet project			10%
		Article outlines (4 at 1 page @)		10%
		Oral presentation 				10%
		Final exam  				30%
Note: Faithful attendance and active participation are essential elements
of the course.
