It could be said that as a political entity Rome lasted from 509 BC
until Christopher Columbus was two years old. Culturally, Rome's
beginnings and end are more difficult to date. Roman culture began
either when Remus jumped his brother's wall or Livy began to write
about it and lasted until a time we shall determine. There is no one
way to get at culture, Roman or otherwise. In this course, we shall
look at many of the approaches available to students of Roman culture,
history, literature, politics, daily life, religion, and philosophy.
It will be important to learn the traditional aspects of Roman culture
as well as to examine closely the assumptions that make that tradition
possible.
