COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION.
Virtually every human endeavor carries with it a set of tools and a
vocabulary describing
its operations, and interpreting literature is no different. The
purpose of this course is
to familiarize you with the terminology that literary critics use and
the practices they
engage in. We will read a variety of poems, short fiction, and plays
with an eye toward
acquiring a better understanding of how they function, what they mean,
and how they affect
us (or are supposed to affect us). We also will learn what different
ways of reading help
us to see and do and what they limit us in seeing and doing. In this
way, the course will
help you become more insightful readers of literature, more easily
able to appreciate this
important form of human expression.
