Criminal Justice-coas | Alternative Social Control Systems
P202 | 4283 | Kevin Whiteacre
This class explores alternatives to the traditional retributive
ideology of the criminal justice system. In this traditional approach
the State, or others authorized to do so, attempts to identify,
isolate, and subdue some type of "enemy." Instead, we will
investigate ways of encouraging social harmony independent of the
State through personal responsibility and community. Safety (or
social control) may be found in strong communities where citizens
recognize their interconnectedness with each other and the world
around them. Through an interdisciplinary blend of classic written
works, we will analyze informal dispute resolution, deviance,
peacemaking and how power relations influence the potential for these
phenomena to increase or decrease our feelings of safety and control.
